This is a photo I took a while ago (7 pm). The place where the bus accident took place in Kotmale today.
(Picture below)
Since the lights were on, I stopped the vehicle and went there.
(There were a few other people. )
This story needs to be told.
I go to Bandarawela every Sunday morning by 7.30 am. (For my tuition classes)
Today too, when I passed this place, it was almost 6 am. There were quite a few people and a considerable number of vehicles on the road.
At that time, a patient was being loaded into a 1990 ambulance and taken away.
When I slowed down, I heard, "Okay, the last one is being taken away," people on the road were saying loudly to someone.
I thought that an accident that happened a long time ago was all over now.
Because there were a lot of people, a lot of vehicles, (they said they came to see it)
Everyone was looking at the cliff.
I had to go to class at 7.30 and I thought there was nothing I could do.
It was only in the afternoon that I saw the news that the situation was serious.
I came back this evening thinking I would stop there.
That's when I saw these lights.
I went there for about 15 minutes and it was already dark. There were a few people who were walking on the road.
A few boys from the village were talking a little excitedly there. I became friendly with them after a while.
They asked me who the gentleman was? Is he from the police? Is he a government official?
I laughed and said, "No."
I am a tuition teacher.
Then the story started.....
Sir, you are more educated than us, we don't have degrees.
This brother is the one who dragged about 15 dead bodies alone. Someone pointed.
He also pointed to his house right next to where the bus crashed, (I won't mention his name)
That man says, sir, none of us are dead here.
But it's hard for us to make up our minds.
That's why these lights are lit.
I'm the one who saw this at five in the morning, sir. I shouted to the whole village and woke up people and brought them here.
Sir, tell me how long it will take for the police to come after I dial 119.
I said it won't take that long to come to the nearest police station.
That's it, sir. But the police over here (in Kotmale) came after two or three hours.
He also said that the boys called at 1990 and it took hours for them to come.
Those people are to blame. We did what we could.
If we had done these things properly, more lives could have been saved,
But another one, sir, there is not even a Panadol pill in our hospital here. If you go to that hospital, it is over.
I said that it is a regional hospital, there is no way it has many facilities.
Those people are saying that out of frustration.
I patted the brother on the shoulder and told him that you have learned a lot.
You have humanity that many educated people do not have.
I was surprised by the way the dead were dragged, the way the injured were brought.
Some people say, sir, do you smell the burning smell near us?
I still haven't eaten a grain of rice today.
Every child on the bus was saved.
They said that they collected the bodies of the dead by hand. They told me never to eat meat again, because they had seen them.
That group told me, sir, if possible, make a video and tell this.
Now the news is not the real story that goes on fb.
At that time, no one was there, now after everything happened, people come and put up false signs.
Government institutions are not responsible.
It's no use calling 119, it's a lie,
The police are not helpful.
The hospital is the same.
But a guy from the army came down and said that Pora is a super guy.
Those guys said that tomorrow we will build a church here to pay tribute to those who died as much as possible.
When I tried to give money for it, they said no, sir, no money.
Tell me what happened here.
So many people died because they didn't take responsibility to save them. 😥
Even if the story these people tell is not 100%, there are things worth looking into.
If anyone has an accident in such a remote area, it's nothing more than this.
What is special about what is happening today is,
As I see it, the number of deaths increases within a short time after hospitalization.
If it is a major hospital like Peradeniya or Kandy, the situation can change.
What else happens when there is a delay of hours and the necessary treatment is not available?
If there is a dereliction of duty by state institutions, then investigations should be conducted and
Such unfortunate deaths should be prevented in the future.
Even after midnight (12.50), this was recorded as an inconvenience due to the request of the young man and the shock that arose in me.
I wish the patients a speedy recovery! 🙏
